Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
