Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, one notices a demand to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
