Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
