EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
