Approximately 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then found multiple other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report initial examinations indicate the substance was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; investigators are presently not informed of any harm in association with the event," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for information.
A senior political figure commented the incident made him stunned and had to be resolved promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the killing of nine victims by a assailant aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
